Rubbish reality

In the interest of presenting a balanced view of Naples I also stumbled across this travel update recently. Of course for residents of Naples this is old news. The issue of rubbish collection and disposal has been a problem here for twenty years, largly due to the control of the organised crime networks and the mismanagement of government funding.

US Embassy Warns Travelers About Naples Garbage
July 10 — The US Embassy in Rome is warning Americans about possible health risks if they visit Naples, where a three-month-long garbage worker strike has left towering piles of waste on the city's streets. The garbage could attract disease-carrying rats. Also, desperate Naples residents have resorted to burning the garbage, with the bonfires giving off toxic fumes and smoke.

The reality is that this is a problem for the outer suburbs. The central historical area, where we live, and the areas with money and tourism don't suffer. In fact, in our street the rubbish is collected every night between 11-12 pm like clockwork. It's a shame that these travel warnings are not more detailed, because most travellers stay within the centre of Naples and most would never even be aware of the piles of rubbish that residents 30 kilometres away have to live with.
